GaLaBau 2012: Focus on safer playgrounds
  • Some 100 exhibitors in the PLAYGROUND segment
  • New forum: playground experts give informative presentations
Hall 1 at GaLaBau (12–15 September 2012) in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg will be transformed into a huge playground. The PLAYGROUND segment shows the latest seesaws, climbing frames, swings, rope bridges & co. Some 100 manufacturers of playground equipment and leisure facilities show their products and innovations of particular interest to planners and clients from city and local authorities. The newly launched PLAYGROUND Forum organized by the Bundesverband für Spielplatzgeräte- und Freizeitanlagen-Hersteller (BSFH – Federal Association of Playground Equipment and Leisure Facility Manufacturers) in cooperation with the magazine Playground@Landscape focuses on “Playground Safety”.

“Accidents still happen in playgrounds that could have been avoided through regular and expert inspection, maintenance and repair of the playground equipment. This is not acceptable, which is why we are so concerned about qualified training for playground inspectors,” says Gerold Gubitz, Chief Executive Officer of BSFH. The association and its members strongly advocate that the annual main inspection and the inspection of newly installed equipment in playgrounds be carried out by qualified persons. The association has defined criteria for training as qualified playground inspector in report DIN SPEC 79161.

Those interested can find out what training as a qualified playground inspector involves, where it is offered and what requirements the participants must fulfil at the GaLaBau exhibition in Nürnberg. Friedrich Blume, trainer and playground expert at DEULA* Westphalia-Lippe, gives a presentation entitled “Training as Playground Inspector: What decision-makers should know!” at the PLAYGROUND Forum in hall1. The presentation takes place at 11:30 on Wednesday, 12 September, and again at 10:00 on Thursday, 13 September. Another important issue concerns the legal consequences that playground operators should be aware of. These are dealt with in the presentation given by Ralf Mandernach, GW-Kommunalversicherung WaG, at 13:00 on Wednesday, 12 September. His topic is entitled: “In dubio pro res? What happens in the case of a playground accident?” Following at 14:30, Robert Terp TÜV Austria, reports on “The Courage to Take Risks in Austria’s Playgrounds”.

Design of playgrounds: creative or sporting?

Presentations on subjects concerning the design and construction of playgrounds are offered at the PLAYGROUND Forum on Friday, 14 September 2012. The presentation by Klaus Peter Gust, SIK Holzgestaltungs GmbH, on “Robinia wood – Creative play facilities” is on the programme at 11:00. After this at 12:00, Ulrich Scheffler of Lappset tackles the issue of “Sport in the Game – Sport captures the playground”. “Quality Campaign for Fall Protection: What the user must know!” is the title of the presentation by Achim Höse, Head of Fall Protection Department, at 13:00, and at 14:00 Renate Zeumer and Steffen Strasser, both from Playfit, discuss the subject of “Sports Facility or Fitness Trail? How do demographic parameters affect playing?”.

Admission to the presentations is free. Prior registration not necessary.
