The Golden Bull, the Nürnberg Peace Banquet, the first German railway, the Nazi Party rallies, the Nürnberg War Crimes Trials – Nürnberg has many historic milestones to offer. Interested visitors can find out about the city’s more than 950-year history in the Fembohaus municipal museum. A multivision show lasting about an hour explains the city’s history to visitors in an entertaining way.

Many sensible inventions originate from the Franconian capital, such as the modern hexagonal branded pencil, the Tempo tissue and the text marker. The city also has culinary delicacies to offer like the Nürnberg grilled sausage, whose recipe, size and filling was laid down by a council regulation at the end of the 15th century. Incidentally, the name “Nürnberg (grilled) sausage” has been protected EU-wide since 2003. The Nürnberg lebkuchen (gingerbread) is also world-famous. In the main season from mid August to October, the company Schmidt alone makes three million lebkuchen every day from some 80 tons of raw materials.

Nazi Party Rallies and Nürnberg War Crime Trials

Those who prefer can explore Nürnberg on their own, but the more than 30 museums from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and Albrecht Dürer’s House to the New Museum – State Museum of Art and Design need a holiday of several weeks. The Nürnberg Documentation Centre is devoted to a darker chapter of the city’s history: the Nazi Party Rallies in Nürnberg. The myth of the Nazi Party Rallies is examined in the Documentation Centre as well as the terror of the totalitarian system. The Memorium Nürnberg Trials at Bärenschanze provides information about the history, course and consequences of the trials with historical sound and film documents at the original scene.

New dolphin lagoon in zoo

The good weather programme should include the Imperial Castle, the old town hall, the Frauenkirche church, the Handwerkerhof (Artisans’ Courtyard), the Gooseherd Fountain and the Heilig-Geist-Spital (hospice). Nürnberg zoo is also worth a visit – the unique landscaped zoo in a spacious wooded park celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The dolphin lagoon opened there last year is the first outdoor dolphinarium in Germany. The 1,580 square metre lagoon has six pools, which can be covered by an air-inflated structure if required. Four dolphins and eight sea lions share the facility, which has been built in line with the most modern aspects. The adjacent manatee building also opened in 2011 houses a cross-section from the Amazonas jungle and is the home of 50 species of plants and 35 species of animals, including four manatees.

Guided tours of a different kind

A good tip for everyone wanting to get to know Nürnberg more intensively and away from the guided tours of the city for tourists is the “Geschichte Für Alle e.V. – Institut für Regionalgeschichte” (History for Everyone – Institute for Regional History). The two-hour tours that explain the city to the participants in an unusual way cost six to seven euros. Registration is not required. The meeting point is noted for each tour. “From unripe spelt grain rissoles to guerrilla gardeners – sustainability in Nürnberg”, “Learned humanists and renitent nuns – Nürnberg’s golden era” or “Murderers, forgers, stabbers – a tour of Nürnberg’s crime history” are only a few of the themes offered there. The programme also includes tours of certain districts in the city, such as a tour of Saint Johannis or the northern part of Nürnberg.
